dry spell
The first weekend without it was the hardest. I felt disconnected, even physically uncomfortable at times. I itched for even a five-minute fix. I found myself bouncing around this city, flitting from one internet café to another, not caring where I would land, or how seedy and grimy the keyboard beneath my fingers. I did this between social engagements - it was my dirty little secret.
The second weekend went a little more smoothly, I checked email just once at a friend’s place, and started using my phone to contact people. It was awkward at first, but then I started enjoy the whole in-contact thing while actually being able to *stand up* and *walk around*.
The third weekend blew by. Between this, and my cable still not working, I had gotten so used to not knowing the weather, the news, or little updates from far-away friends, I’d become the quintessential New Yorker. I was in my own bubble, unaware of the world around me, and I found it a soft and welcoming place.
This weekend, a man came into my bedroom, tooled around a little, inserted a slim object into the side of my laptop, and here I am. It’s odd to be in this formerly insular place and all of you right here with me. So, what do you think of the new pink shag rug? I’ve started sitting on it every night and reading books. I might even do that again in a while.
In other news, I’m thinking it’s about time for me to break a different kind of dry spell.

only you could make getting back on the net sound so dirty.
I like it.

Here's hoping the object that breaks your other *dry spell* isn't thin and doesn't end up in the side of your computer. That would be a bad date even beyond MY wildest dreams.

I say break the dry spell ON the pink shag rug. That would be a great story.

breaking a dry spell is always difficult, you have to have all the proper people for the dance, and you have to beseech the gods, none of this asking or pleading. Everyone gets in a circle while chanting, and sometimes one of you will fall out of step and you have to start it all over again! It's crazy trying to make it rain. Or were you talking about something else?

"you have to beseech the gods"
Oh, thank god you were thinking of the wrong type of dry spell. If I had to not only navigate the world of NYC-dating AND beseech the gods to get some action, it will be a long, very cold winter.
