bands, balance, and bourbon

Debbie from the reception site called this evening in regards to music. (Of course her name is Debbie. OF. COURSE.) She got my cell phone number from my mother, who warned her I was impossible to get hold of because I never pick up the phone, but Debbie got me on the first try. It was perfect, really, because you see, a friend who is into these types of things had recommended this band, and I had their number on my desk but hadn’t gotten to calling them today, and lo and behold, Debbie calls and it turns out that that very band just happens to be the in-house band at the reception site and – well, isn’t that just fabulous?

Yes, Debbie, it’s extremely fabulous.

Anyway, the thing with this band is that they’re really popular and she can barely believe that they are not yet booked for our date and we should really come in like tomorrow to set it up and it’s perfect because they are located right here in North Jersey.

Yes, Debbie, but we live in New York.

Ah, yes – so, you should come in Saturday! Or Sunday, I mean, I don’t work Sundays but I’d come in just to get you set up and…

How about I call you tomorrow to set up a time on Sunday?

Hm, okay, well, are you sure you can’t come in Saturday? It would be much better, you know, I work six days a week and Sunday is my only day off and…

Okay, we will try to come by on Saturday. Can I call you tomorrow to set up an appointment?

Yes – let me check right here – well, I am actually really booked on Saturday. Nearly all day. But, I have one cancellation at 1 PM; could you come at 1 PM?

Er, well, that’s going to be tough for us. Maybe we could come by after work one day next week?

Well, what day are you thinking?

Hm, not Tuesday or Wednesday, we will be out of town, and Monday night is no good, so maybe Thursday?

You really should try to come by Monday night – they could be booked by Thursday night.

So, I'll call you tomorrow. Bye! Have a great night! Bye!

[Bourbon Interlude.]

You see, I’m really trying to keep an even keel here. We found a site and an agreeable date and price and so we’re on our way, right? Well, no. You see, we need a band [See above.] And a florist. Photographer. Invitations. A dress for me. And the girls. And don’t forget the engagement party and where do I think I’d like to have a bridal shower and when and are we sure we don’t want a videographer? We should sort some transportation for our friends from the city, and remember to reserve a block of rooms, and if this whole cupcake wedding cake is important to me, we really need to figure out how to get it from place A to place B when they very likely don’t deliver across state lines. Oh, one more thing – ketubah rental. Rabbi rental. Gift registry. Save-the-date cards. Party favors.

[Bourbon Refill.]

My job hunt.
His job hunt.
Syracuse.

[Bourbon top-off.]

Oh, and we have to move from this apartment in a month and weren’t overwhelmed with any of the three we saw this evening.

[Bourbon Round Three.]

Um, what were we talking about again?

Hmmm...if y'all are moving and he's getting a big raise...maybe the job with either pay for moving expenses...or you could hire movers? :)

2 | dahl | January 27, 2005 03:42 AM

Cringe.

I'm glad THAT's behind me...

3 | Mathieu | January 27, 2005 06:32 AM

So, what kind of bourbon is that?

4 | michael | January 27, 2005 07:50 AM

Thanks dahl!

Oh, and michael, Basily Haydens. Of COURSE.

5 | deb | January 27, 2005 08:09 AM

either i'm a baaaad reader or it's obvious i haven't had my morning coffee yet, but these questions arose: you have to move? again? and didn't you just move there?

6 | sassylittlepunkin | January 27, 2005 09:43 AM

Just a hint, you'll probably want to KEEP the ketubah. Don't rent it.

7 | bella | January 27, 2005 09:46 AM

sassy - You are 100% correct. I moved here in May 2004. I moved to my apartment before that in September 2003. And the one before that in June 2003.

bella - Um YES. The ketubah, not rented. I meant the chuppah. Kind of funny, though, right?

...and THAT is why I'm still living in sin. Delicious, delicious, sin...

9 | Ms Mincemeat | January 27, 2005 11:11 AM

Heh. Me too?

I think what I was trying to get at before the evening descended into a bourbon-ed blur was 1) Isn't that Debbie chick annoying? and 2) The wedding stuff, no matter how unwieldy, I can handle. It's just the wedding stuff on top of the upstate New York stuff and the apartment-hunting and job-hunting stuff at the same time is a lot.

Thank god for self-medication.

wow. something needs to give.

11 | hubs | January 27, 2005 11:22 AM

here's the photographer that shot my wedding - she was excellent: http://www.cappyhotchkiss.com/main.html

You sure do know how to kill a smidge of my jealousy :) In other news, my nails look like crap and I need a pre-Miami blitz. Whatcha doing next Tues.?? I miss the Debs!

13 | Ari | January 27, 2005 12:38 PM

what kind of party favors?

You do have a lot on your plate. Funny how everything happens at once.

14 | jocelyn | January 27, 2005 01:09 PM

Party favors: Custom M&Ms!

also - the bailey's hot cocoa recipe will really make you some friends at the syracuse football games.

also also - i have a good custom cards/invitations designer (my sister) if you want one (i think she's good)...

A woman after my own bourbon-infused heart. Basil Hayden's is, without a doubt, the best bourbon on the planet. Perfect choice to get through the annoying wedding planner and dull hat I am sure is her over-excited and manic manner of talking.

16 | Tracy | January 27, 2005 02:59 PM

Instead of dealing with the incredibly annoying "other Debbie", couldn't you just call the band directly? Just a thought.

17 | Howard | January 27, 2005 03:07 PM

oh, and our rabbi has his own chuppah that we can use - or you can have the florist do one.

18 | dahl | January 27, 2005 05:13 PM

The best band in Jersey is the wrens. Probably NOT an ideal vibe for a wedding, though...

19 | bionicroach | January 27, 2005 05:40 PM

So eloping is out of the question?

20 | Wicked H | January 27, 2005 07:10 PM

sarah obviously doesn't know joce.

21 | hubs | January 27, 2005 07:15 PM

Hubs.-- Clearly.

Deb-- Mmmmmm! Basil Haydens! good girl. That is what I was drinking when I went skinny dipping with ----- (insert famous movie star)

22 | jocelyn | January 27, 2005 07:26 PM

sarah - Thank you x 3! Can you email me your sister's info? thesmitten/gmail.

Tracy - Yes. In fact, I think there's a little left...

Howard - The "other debbie" will not be neccessary. I can't believe I'm saying this, but we just fell in love with a wedding band that was not hers. They even cover Bon Jovi. I'm just saying.

Dahl - Thank you, and your photographer looks great.

Maybe I should let joce take care of the party favors? Heheheheh.

23 | deb | January 27, 2005 08:04 PM

oh, and for party favors, we were thinking either chocolate or a donation in everyone's name to something like city harvest....its the one thing we're totally not on the ball for.

24 | dahl | January 28, 2005 07:14 PM

Thank you for reminding WHY I am going to run away to Vegas if I ever get around to getting married.
