cringe

In keeping with a theme of self-conscious writing since I took on a job that pays me to pump out words, I have decided to take the ten phrases I have written this year which make me most ashamed to put the words “editor” or “writer” anywhere near my name, out of context to point at and mock them publicly for their inadequacies, namely in the areas of grammar, sentence structure, or word choice. I consider this an exercise in self-improvement. And, you know, being my own worst critic so nobody else can be. But mostly, to air out my demons before I attempt a second piece of professional gibberish.

  1. "brimming with shiny newness and potential"
  2. "the first, er, dress for which she bridesmaid-ed"
  3. "finish selecting trés important things like china and silver for our wedding registry"
  4. "spend the entire meal slurping the food dripping down my face"
  5. "sumptuously tiered"
  6. "fairytale-likeness"
  7. "life is more fun when you know there will be spiked brunch foods in your future"
  8. "Like, I was asked to."
  9. "Also, don't just have to use my Verdana 8.5 which I am obsessed with at 100%."
  10. "In my office, we’re still partying like it’s 1999, minus the whole sky purple and people running everywhere part."

I think we shall call today “Well-Adjusted Monday.”

I vote for 5. and 6. as the most atrocious. But we all have been guilty of writing stupendously fatuous remarks. But I must say I particularly like "Fairytale-Likeness"...in what context was that used?

I rather like "sumptuously tiered"...it makes a fine Google search term.

I like 5 & 6 as do P Mann and craig, however, I also like 7 & 10. Chalk up the grammatical imperfections to liberal application of "poetic license." Bottom line: they "work!"

I was just blog hopping and enjoyed reading your site. Thought I'd say hello.

The new design is definitely brimming with shiny newness and potential.

I don't see anything wrong with these. Part of the fun of a blog is making up your own hyphenated nonsense and creating your very own grammar and style. And I think you do it well. There is, however, the tiny error of the wrong accent mark on "tres." But only lame francophones will notice that.

Holy shit, Deb. On your new background... I had downloaded that VERY SAME one and attempted to use it on my site. I could never figure out what to do with it. I love what you did with it. :)

If you're re-reading yourself, you're a writer, and if you're re-reading others, you're an editor.

Or something.

wow. you mean bridesmaid-ed isn't a word?
Dude, I've got to get me a dictionary.
