rebel yell, photos by alex

Someone had to upstage my wee Canon SD110 this weekend by picking himself up a Canon EOS Digital Rebel. Yes, that is my jealousy you feel seething between the lines. Though we did not do anything exciting enough this weekend to warrant a truly interesting gallery, the camera is so incredible that it even makes hanging out on the roof (1) (1b), drying flowers (2), grilling artichoke hearts (3-4), and bodega roses for future mothers-in-law (5-6) look artful. Additionally, although you’ve done nothing to deserve this, a picture of my Attack Forehead, each freckle digitally enumerated.

My, aren't you a lovely young lady? I happen to think that freckles are charming! And not just because I get a smattering of them myself if I venture out into the sun for more than five seconds.

Nice. I know how he feels. I have the exact same one

Did Alex look at the Nikon D70? I'm just curious since I'm thinking about buying a new digital and the Canon and Nikon are my top 2 choices. I have a 20+ year old Canon AE-1 that I love, but have heard that the EOS feels too light.

He can answer for himself, I suppose, but I know that he was torn at first, but he already has the non-digital Canon Rebel and loves it, heard such great things about the digital, AND the photographer we are using for our wedding swore by Canon products... that pretty much cinched it for him. Btw, he did not get the Rebel that came out, like, last week, he got the first one. More and more, people told us that it was the lens that counted, and best to spend the extra money on that and not the shiniest new version. Hope that helps!

Howard - I did look into both the D70 and the digital Rebel, and everything I read said that the two were roughly comparable. The D70 supposedly has a few bells and whistles that the Rebel doesn't, but for what I'm going to do with it, I didn't think I'd need whatever I'd be missing with the Rebel.

The D70 was also something $300-400 more expensive than the Rebel, so I figured I would get a lot of camera for a lower price. Also, like Debbie said, our wedding photographer immediately said, "Rebel," when I asked her which she would pick between the Rebel and the D70. Also, more than one person has said that the lens is key, and that it's better to spend more money on a good lens than on a more expensive camera.

Oh, and as far as the Rebel being too light, I actually just remarked the other night that it's actually quite substantial. It might feel kind of small (or at least it does in my monster hands), but it has a nice heft to it, so it doesn't feel cheap at all.

Also, if you do get the Rebel, get it in black; it looks much more bad-ass than the silver. (I got mine from 42nd St. Photo - it's the only place online that I found that still had the black model in stock.)

That's hilarious. I have the Asian SD110 model I bought from home, my fiance was so envious/jealous he went out and got a 7 Megapixel Canon for himself.

Thanks you two! I will probably get the Rebel if do get one because I'm about 99% sure that I can use my older Canon lenses since they have the same mount. They won't be autofocus, but I think I can live with that. I have always loved my Canon and will probably upgrade to the digital.

And yes, the lens is the key.

And in case you're wondering, it's not the size of the lens that matters...it's how you use it.
