In which I boot Holiday Cheer to the curb — in keeping with the Festivus tradition — and air my Grievances one by one.
- Eric Wilson. This might be the most offensive article I have ever read.
The cost of a transit strike to department stores and designer boutiques in New York during the week before Christmas and Hanukkah will undoubtedly be staggering. The cost to the greater cause of fashion could be even worse. [Emphasis added.]
Raise your hand if you’d like to find Eric Wilson and steal all of his $55 t-shirts, $375 sweaters and $130 ski hats and force him to walk around SoHo in Old Navy performance fleece, with “studiously mismatched winter accessories,” and hoods/hats for warmth, or as one of his interviewees said, “the fashion equivalent of a mullet.”
1b. Cynthia Rowley. Then again, I don’t know why I am wasting disk space on a man who is baffled as to why more people didn’t embrace the furs and boots of Dolce & Gabbana and Stella McCartney last week as they walked to work in 35 degree weather. Not when Ms. Rowley spews gems like this.
People are dressing like they work in outdoor booths at the flea market.
Cynthia Rowley, you are an elitist pig. And to think that you grace Target with your designs! (Ghastly hotpink, orange, swirly, pseudo-hip, “swell” home accessories.) I bet you exfoliate times after each forced visit that middle-class retail chain.
- DHL. Oh boy, where do I start? I think I’ll compile a list of the lies you have told us in the past week! 1. We made a first delivery attempt on Wednesday. [No missed package notice.] 2. We made a second delivery attempt on Thursday. [Ibid.] 3. We made a final delivery attempt on Friday. [Lies! I WAS HOME ALL DAY!] 4. We will hold your package for you at the loading dock. [You did not.] 5. You will be able to pick up your package at the loading dock. [No, we were not able.] 6. We can’t find it. [No, you didn’t look.] 7. But will call you when do. [Also not true.] 8. We never said we’d call you. [Ibid.] 9. This isn’t our fault because you see you called Customer Service and not the loading station and even though they told you the package would be held, they are not able to say that with any guarantee. [Wait, what?] 10. We’re sorry for the inconvenience, despite our sneering, arrogant tone. [Oh wait, you never said that.] Hey thanks DHL, our sisters really enjoyed the elegantly wrapped boxes of AIR we gave them for Hanukah.
- United Healthcare. Because I spent a month this year between health insurance policies, I know that the full price of my birth control prescription is $40/month. So, this weekend when I received a letter from my healthcare provider that my pill will now go from Tier B ($30) copayment to Tier C ($40), and considering that $40 is very likely a pharmacy chain mark-up of, say, a $35 prescription, I calmly came to ponder why I now have to PAY MY HEALTH INSURANCE COMPANY for the monthly honor of not creating spawn. The. Nerve.
- My malevolent former boss. Yes, I know I am 9+ months out of my previous job, but still, I can’t help but have flashbacks from time to time about just how bad things can be. Take last Christmas, for example. Lacking better management/stress-handling/rationalization skills, my boss assigned a coworker to work on Christmas, or else. Unfortunately, this girl was from a very religious family who were simply not comprehending the idea of her not coming home for Christmas. Only when she told my boss that if she was required to work Christmas, she’d have no choice but to quit (and for gosh sakes, I’d hope get a lawyer), did my boss allow her to spend the holidays with her family. Have I told you how much better my life is now that I am out of that environment?
- Fresh Direct oven thermometer. For ages, I’ve sworn I’d stop blaming my oven when things didn’t bake just right and buy a damned oven thermometer. Perhaps I should have invested more than $4.95 into the doneness of my cakes and cookies, because this one likes to tell me that the temperature is consistently 50-75 degrees too cold. The one time I decided to listen to it and adjust the dial accordingly, the cake nearly burnt, then caved in, and in the end taste more like a stale cookie. Made with the freshest of ingredients, of course.
Gosh, I feel so much better now! Now, who wants to get pinned?

I was paying $50 a month for my Yasmin, with my insurance, when I realized I could shop around and not use my insurance. I found it at Target for $28 a month. I must have called 10 stores/drug stores, worth it though.

consider me also hating united healthcare. not only do they suck with the whole birth control prescription thing, but it's FUCKING IMPOSSIBLE to get any human being on the phone. i almost cried the last time i did the automated answer system game for 20 minutes with no avail.
for some reason, however, they give me yasmin at $25/pack from walgreens with my insurance.. probably because i'm a student though. (that's my only guess)
i wish planned parenthood offered yasmin, i love that place - actually friendly and understanding.

Hmm.. I pay $5 for my generic bc pills. First, ask if there's a generic option available... Ortho-TriCyclen has a generic one now. Also, can you switch insurances? Is there a way to get Alex's? My firm allows me a switch a year. But Aetna has done well by me this year, so I'm sticking around.

I know. Don't get me started on our insurance WHO DOESNT COVER ORAL CONTRACEPTIVES but will cover Viagra. And the price w/o coverage? $43 a month.
And the insurance is through a hospital-shame on them.

Yup. Horribly offensive article (and I work in fashion). Too bad Mr. Wilson wasnt bright enough to make the connection that those wearing the D&G boots are also the ones with the chauffered cars, not walking across the Brooklyn Bridge.

As for Festivus ... well, I'm kind of happy this year. Unless you want to get me started in my mother-in-law ...

My dad's office is right by a DHL office, and he found a stash of 8 digital cameras, some camcorders, some mp3 players and the like hidden in a box covered with snow up against the back of his building. he took it inside and called the cops. a DHL employee (wearing his uniform) came to my dad's office and inquired about the box. when my dad said "sure come on in and have a look while we wait for the police" the DHL guy suddenly had to leave. so the cop came and took the box, but never gave them a case number, or any contact info, and then my dad later found the cop and the DHL employee in the cop car in the DHL parking lot divying up the loot.
so. if you were missing christmas presents, rest assured that bribed cops and theiving DHL employees "found" them and put them to good use.

I suppose I should clarify the way I understand it to work: A hundred different workplaces may use the same health insurance company, but choose their own arrangement of what to cover. Some work places have UHC but a very generous plan; I obviously do not, as my copay had already been $30 a month! That said, I've gone over to their online pharmarcy and the same pill will be about $13/month! Thus, online it will be from here forward. I remain no less baffled, though.
