What a weekend! Friday night, on a whim, we went to Cookshop for dinner (which was every bit as good as we’d heard) mostly because I was already tired of prepping and cooking for our big Hanukah Dinner Party Saturday – with our families, and loot galore – sweaters and gloves and menorahs and 9-color sanding sugar decorating kits and big old flowers and books and fluffy robes and a Gourmet subscription, and I’m telling you, this was more fun than getting married. For dinner, I cooked beef short ribs and latkes and soup and lemon pound cake, which caved in and dried out, snickering at me knowing I have little ability to handle imperfections, especially my own. I spent Christmas day through Monday with my best friend and her mother, who are… well, hopefully going to have a better January than December. Monday night I returned to my husband who hasn’t shaved since Wednesday and is beginning to look vaguely werewolf (though a cute one), and forced him to watch the DVD that accompanied our finally-unpacked engagement gift Cuisinart, an experience almost as exciting (ha) as watching the first three episodes of LOST later, part of the first-season box set his sister enriched our sofa-vegging experience with. I have no idea why any person would desire to read the above paragraph, I could barely follow it myself, but if you’ve made it this far, and then again even if you haven’t – I hope you had a wonderful weekend/holiday, too.

So what was wrong with the lemon pound cake? I'm planning to make it tomorrow. Happy New Year!

It's a perfect recipe; I was just having oven temperature issues.

We had short ribs on Christmas day. Have you tried Collichio's recipe? It takes 3 days to make but OMG...it's heaven. And leaves behind great stock for french onion soup.

I had my first experience of cooking and taking food to my parents' for Christmas since I'm now married and moved out.

It was harrowing to say the least, but there were no burns (me or the food) and no major spills! I call that success.

BTW - I got a Cuisinart popcorn-maker today, along with some gourmet popcorn from Williams-Sonoma, (a sorta belated wedding gift, since they truly have a year, right?) Anyway - fancy schmancy and I can't WAIT to use it!
