Francesca tagged me to do this meme, oh, weeks and weeks ago but I’m slow and not very meme-like in my writing. For her, though, I can get over myself for at least an hour.
Seven Things to Do Before I Die:
- Live in Paris for a year.
- Get very good at baking bread.
- Go to Russia, China, and Africa. If I’m lucky, more than once.
- Write something that stays relevant; that my grandchildren could read. You know, if they were bribed to, with promises processed sugary foods that grandmother would never, ever allow.
- Drive cross country.
- Get back to claywork and/or painting.
- Update this list because I did it all already.
Seven Things I Can't Do:
- Dance.
- Eat beets.
- Give a rat’s ass about politics.
- Stop punctuating things that are not sentences.
- Not obsess over details.
- Not criticize my big old thighs.
- Run, or at least far or fast.
Seven Things That Attracted Me To Blogging:
- Uh.
- Hm.
- So,
- No, not that.
- Either.
- I found three I really liked: Sarah B., Krissa C., Josh N. And I only had the bad form to go on a date with one of them.
- Well, I guess I like to write or something. Wasn't that eloquent?
Seven Things I Say Most Often:
- Want.
- Utterly.
- Unbelievably.
- Retarculous.
- Inevitably.
- Indeed.
- Prettypleasecanwegoonvacationpleaseplease.
Seven Books That I Love:
- The Art of Eating, though I haven’t read it yet
- Here is New York
- The Wild Party
- Kissing in Manhattan
- Everything by Ruth Reichl
- The Great Gatsby
- Monsoon Diary, mostly because I finished it last week.
Seven Movies I Watch Again and Again:
- Heathers
- Breakfast at Tiffanys
- Shawshank Redemption
- When Harry Met Sally
- Go
- Amelie
- Pretty In Pink
Bonus round - Seven of the Last Things I Have Cooked (see above):
- Granola
- Pizza
- Cupcakes
- Chocolate Orbit Cake
- Jalapeno Cheddar corn muffins
- Orange Chocolate Chunk cake
- Shirred eggs

Just had to tell you... When it gets slow at work, I've been reading through your archives again and I came across your entry about a month before the wedding about making cupcakes instead of lists. You inspired me to make cupcakes and my husband (we've been married for 24 days) thinks you need to write more about cupcakes so I make them more. The house smelled amazing...

I am so happy to know I am not the only person who enjoyed Kissing In Manhattan. I also put it on my list.

I went to Russia in 1993. I have to say it was not the most wonderful trip - but very eye-opening. I think I want to go back to renew my view of it. I'm sure things are different there now.
Sarah B. also inspired/inspires me. I miss her everyday posting. She is SUCH an awesome writer.
Wonderful photos, as always. I have a granola recipe, too, but I haven't tried it because, well, I don't seem Earthy enough. How'd it go for you?

Are those muffins not SO the yummiest thing? I made some recently and LOVED, LOVED, LOVED them (as did the rest of the house).

um, chocolate orbit cake? could you go into more detail? sounds delish

Wow, those eggs look amazing (well, as did the cupcakes and chocolate thingie 1 and 2 and jalapeno corn muffins).
Good luck on the seven to-dos. DK and I pinky swore twelve years ago that no matter what, we would live abroad together for a year. And our plan is slowly coming to fruition: Spain 2008 is underway (what with the job planning and Phd finishing and maybe-baby thinking, we've got to think far in advance!).

Uh, where'd you get that granola recipe? I love homemade granola.

The Chocolate Orbit Cake is a David Lebovitz recipe. It's flourless, and oh-so-heavy. If I made it again, and how could I not, I'd use 70% (more bitter) chocolate instead of 62%, and maybe a teaspoon of instant coffee to the melted chcolate. Otherwise, it was superbly easy. And so rich, you'll need 20 people to finish it. Recipe over here: http://www.davidlebovitz.com/recipes/orbit_cake.html
I've used a few granola recipes, from Ina Garten's (delish, but too oily), to this from Epicurious. http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/recipe_views/views/108926
I use much less honey and oil, and my own mix of dried fruit. You'll never go back to the pre-made stuff. Alex, of course, thinks that it is missing chocolate chips, but what do you expect?

You need to start posting those recipes!

Deb, which corn muffin recipe do you use? Have been looking for a great one. Dicovered your blog while on maternity leave, now read it all the time.

I try to link to the recipes, when they are online, on the Flickr photo pages. It just seems neater that way.
I used Mark Bittman's from How to Cook Everything - I like the flexibility of it giving you up to nine different additions. I added one cup of creamed corn, 1 minced jalapeno, and 1 cup of cheddar cheese to the basic recipe. It was a cinch. (However, I think my baking powder might be on its way out, they barely rose.)

YOU DON'T EAT BEETS??? That's just wrong. Goat cheese is not the same without it.
12 | corie | January 25, 2006 04:44 PM
Also wrong is that I don't eat beets but MARRIED A RUSSIAN. Wholly unacceptable.
13 | deb | January 25, 2006 05:16 PM
Hey, thank you.
14 | Sarah B. | January 25, 2006 05:56 PM
Those cupcakes are killing me virtually.
PS. While I was wading back through the archives to look at some of my favorite older posts, I realized that the "just put your lips together" thread was gone. Eaten in the blog-move?

She inherited the aversion to beets from her mother. I love beets, borscht or anything of that genre. Her mother is just deprived. You'd think that being of German descent, she too would love beets. Go figure!

I agree with Corie- beets were invented to be roasted and eaten with greenery and goat cheese and a light vinaigrette-- but to each her own. I hate white chocolate.
17 | Anne Glamore | January 25, 2006 07:43 PM
I'm hoping the beets problem doesn't become a marital issue. That's like Alex hating hamburgers.

For the record, this granola recipe from Epicurious rocks. I used a little less honey and butter to save a little on calories. . .

Okay -- so no HTML in the comments, huh. Try this: http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/recipe_views/views/233202
