i'm a dancin' man and i just can't lose.
Last night, my newly-reunited husband and I went to Jocelyn’s awesome stained glass exhibit opening in Brooklyn, leaving early because we’re old and married, and also, because we’d already had dinner.
All liquored-up In the cab ride home, I informed Alex that I’d seen a recipe on a food blog this week for homemade Oreos, and I’m telling you, his eyebrows shot up so far they nearly landed on top of his head. “Oreos? You know how to make Oreos?” Oh woman after his already-spoken-for heart! Cue the cab dropping us off in front of Gristedes at 10PM so we could pick up ecstatic ingredients. At the register, Staying Alive came on the loudspeakers and I saw him, I saw Alex tap his foot. Then, the right finger pointed out and crept horizontally across the room; that’s right, I’m talking to you Streits Matzo, I’m talking to you, overripe bananas. He assumed the overbite.
And I swooned, people, I swooned. That’s my man, turning the beat around at Gristedes on 8th Avenue at 10:15 PM. That’s my man, unable to keep the rhythm inside him. There’s never going to be anyone as perfect for me as he is. So, I went home and baked him Oreos.

Oops! Just linked the recipe above the picture.
They were REALLY easy to make. (A little sweet, cut back on the sugar in the cookie next time.)

Those look great! We don't get good oreos over here in London (well...you can if you want to pay a stupendous amount!)...so I will definitely have to try to make those. My fiance needs to try an oreo!

All right, I'm just crazy enough to do this. The cookies are approximately 50% larger than regualar Oreos, and 200% as tasty. If you are interested in having me send you a box of 20 oreos for the same amount of dollars, shipping included, send me an email to thesmitten at gmail dot com. I'll send you Pay Pal instructions.
I guess I won't be bored while my husband is away this week after all!

Deb,
I would love for you to make me cookies, but unfortunately, I just spent the weekend in Houston...the restaurant capital of North America. Damn, they look good! You're my culinary hero.
15 | Jen | April 24, 2006 04:38 PM
Do share the recipe with a newbie to your blog.
16 | Rose | April 24, 2006 07:56 PM
I love that story. Sweet and endearing. And those cookies? Well... all of a sudden, I'm hungry.

Deb, i commented eariler on how excited my BF would be, I was right, and he told all his co-workers. I spend like 5 hours today making 3 batches. I did a little improvising, I made 1 regular batch, 1 mint batch with dark chocolate coating and 1 raspberry batch with white chocolate ganache mixed in with the creme, and drizzled on top. AWESOME

perfectly paired, you two. like, well, oreo halves.
19 | HolyMama! | April 25, 2006 01:46 AM
Yes..I do believe I will make these for the Fly Shop's open house in three weeks. I suspect they will not last long (I might eat them all without sharing!) though... :)

What an amzing idea--sell your treats on your blog. That's it!
21 | jocelyn | April 25, 2006 12:30 PM
I've already decided next I want to make marshmallows (I have a recipe), graham crackers (ditto), and package them with chocolate bars in Smores Kits.
Someone PLEASE, buy me a bakery.

This may just be my favorite post of yours...
23 | Jess | April 25, 2006 01:58 PM
Your Alex reminds me so much of my own husband, though mine would probably do the macarena because he'd have no clue what to do if Stayin' Alive was playing.
The oreos look delicious and I'll be blowing my diet all to hell to make them for my own oreo loving man on our 4 year anniversary next week. Thanks for sharing.
24 | Terri | April 25, 2006 05:35 PM
No joke! They look amazing! I'd bet they'd be good with a thin layer of vanilla ice cream in between too!
25 | Kelli | April 25, 2006 06:03 PM
Oh yeah? But can your boyfriend ring your bell? Push, push in the bush? Puh, I dare say he might have trouble doing either of those tasks!
But Oreos, ya got me there.
26 | Mari | April 26, 2006 08:47 AM
Oreos are the glue of society! I can't believe you found a recipe for them- they look sooo good! I am going to try them out this weekend.

Jocelyn's art is beautiful! Thank you for sharing! It reminds me of the stained glass that is in many of the gorgeous Craftsman homes here in the Pacific Northwest.
28 | Rochelle | April 26, 2006 07:27 PM
Omigod- those look amazing. Can you offer lessons as well? Would be happy to buy the cookies, but would love even more to learn how to make them! Am useless in the kitchen, unfortunately :(..

This was so funny as my hubby and I are "store dancers". In fact we were standing in a video game store just yesterday when a great dance song came on. I started dancing away thinking that it was natural that DH would join me. When I turn to look at him, there was, instead, a little boy, about 8 years old, looking up at me with an expression on his face that could only ask "whats wrong lady?". I look around only to see DH looking at games on another shelf... and he wasn't even dancing!

yes, subversive supermarket dancing now can have an oreo afterparty! brava!! brava!!

It might be a little stalkerish to admit, but I read your blog all the time, almost daily. This is my favorite post thus far. After the dating debacles you described, that I relate to, that line " Thereâs never going to be anyone as perfect for me as he is." is pretty much the best line ever. I hope I get that lucky.
